Question: How will the attempted assassination at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner affect presidential security protocols?

The recent attack on the White House Correspondents Dinner signalled a major shortfall in longstanding security protocols. The event hosted several top-level officials, including a majority of the Presidential line of succession – a deadly attack would have crippled the executive – particularly if it was a coordinated plot.

Increased Security Protocols

1. Wider Security Perimeters
   1. Initial reports indicate that the alleged attacker was a guest at the Hilton Hotel, which was hosting the White House Correspondents dinner. He was able to breach the internal perimeter created by the Secret Service and Law Enforcement.
   2. By widening their perimeter and increasing security measures earlier, the Secret Service is likely to expand its security perimeter in events where the President is.
   3. The perimeter’s expansion will allow for a better gauging of threats and protect everyone involved, but will require additional manpower and security readiness.
2. Improved Technology & Threat Screening
   1. The threat was relatively unexpected, and while the Secret Service says they regularly receive threats: they also tell us that these threats are not regularly verifiable or actually true.
   2. In the future, it can be expected that they’ll take steps to up security screening and include more technological analysis to tackle threats and improve screening measures.
   3. Technology and its intersection with threat control can aid the protection of the President, and save lives, making it likely they’ll use these elements in the future.
3. More regular Separation of Vice President
   1. At the Dinner, Vice President J.D. Vance was also in attendance, who is also first in line of succession to the Presidency. It is not normal for the President and Vice President are together at a public venue, so as to protect the continuity of government in times of crisis.
   2. It is expected that priority will be given in the future to protecting the line of succession, with the Vice President kept separate from the President at events more regularly for the sake of succession and continuity of government.
