Question Brief – 10/9/25

October 9th, 2025

Question: Will teacher shortages worsen learning gaps across U.S. schools?

Thought Process: In the status quo, we see nationwide teacher shortages that continue to threaten the classroom experience, and as educators face lower salaries, weak benefits and difficult students; getting new and experienced educators alike into the classroom has become a challenge. This question asks us to articulate the impacts that’ll likely come with the change we see.

  1. Exacerbate Class-related inequalities.
    1. In America’s education system today, we already face inequality as a result of economic class, especially in the quality, pay rates and resources for teachers.
    2. But with this growing shortage, it threatens to widen already ongoing issues in relation to wealth inequality, with less wealthy areas not able to sustain teaching staff, we’re already seeing the shortage make its impact on lower-income communities.
    3. This further exacerbates community development and creates long term educational impacts.
  2. COVID Gap
    1. Currently, the nation’s education system is still grappling with the shortfalls and issues we see as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Most notably, the significant drop in learning standards and student academic performance.
    2. Many schools that don’t have full time staff or enough staff risk weakening the post-COVID recovery that our education system needs to rehabilitate student performance.
    3. With this teacher shortage, we’ll see educational shortfalls that are yet to be solved following the pandemic and lockdown further intensified and education gaps widen.
  3. Impact in the classroom
    1. As of recently, we see the increased use of technology in the classroom. Mainly, resources that use Artificial intelligence have become more prominent. In many areas, online resources have been employed as a major component of educational curriculum.
    2. This is creating less student-teacher interaction and creating shortfalls in communication skills and personality growth. For students across the country, the reliance on technology limits creativity; coupled with a lack of regular instruction and in-class instruction, we face a crisis in developing students.
    3. As a result, we begin to see how this erodes learning outcomes, and while districts seek alternatives, technology is a solution that widens learning gaps and creates students who simply aren’t as creative and interactive.
