Question: What can Pedro Sanchez do to address his domestic popularity crisis?

Thought Process:

Pedro Sanchez, the Prime Minister of Spain continues to face significant domestic disapproval because of deepening economic pressure, fragmentation in his governing coalition and the country’s political polarization. All these conditions have pushed Sanchez to act quickly to control the political narrative, and have tested the survival of his government. 

1. Cost of Living

  1. The Cost of Living in Spain remains a major area of concern for constituents nationwide, with factors like dissatisfaction with economic strain, particularly rising energy costs, food prices, and housing expenses all fracturing public support for Sanchez.
  2. Sánchez can prioritize highly visible  economic policies such as targeted tax cuts, expanded subsidies for energy and transportation, and financial relief for households. Sanchez also needs to formulate a more credible long-term policy outlook for his response to the Cost of Living,a  measure that is likely to increase trust in him and his government. 
  3. If voters feel a direct improvement in their financial situation, approval is likely to rebound regardless of political controversy elsewhere.

2. Unite his coalition

  1. Sanchez currently rules with a governing coalition, made up of various parties, but in recent times, these parties have had significant internal disagreements as to the direction of the government, directly interfering with the public perception surrounding his seemingly disfigured government. 
  2. Sanchez needs to unite his government behind closed doors, making them more closely aligned in the public eye. He also needs to achieve consensus on the major policy issues that the public is paying attention to, creating a unified front in response to public concern.
  3. This political stability matters as much as policy outcomes in shaping public perception, and his governing coalition’s strength is heavily interlinked with the improvement of his popularity.

3. National Unity 

  1. Sánchez’s current image is defined by polarization and tactical political maneuvering. This image has created significant national disunity, because Sanchez isn’t seen as a
  2. To shift this, he can reposition himself as a leader focused on national cohesion. Demonstrating consistency and clarity in decision-making can counter the narrative that his leadership is opportunistic or reactive.
  3. A more inclusive and unifying message could be Sanchez’s saving grace and bolster his approval ratings.
