Question Brief – 4/6/26

We’ve included a bonus question brief this week! Keep reading for 2 in depth question breakdowns 🙂

Question: Will Markwayne Mullin’s tenure at DHS be meaningfully different from Kristi Noem’s?

Thought Process:

Following the dismissal of former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Markwayne Mullin, a now former Senator for Oklahoma has stepped into the role, selling himself as a “steady hand” ready to take over the embattled Department. Mullin shares many of the hardline views on immigration that members of the MAGA wing in the Republican Party do, but how he’ll execute  policy will be closely watched.

Answer:

Firing the CDC Director will negatively impact public health in America because it will lead to instability in the health field.

  1. Political bias is interfering with public health.
  1. Right now, the CDC is supposed to operate independently as the nation’s scientific authority on disease control.
  2. But when a director is fired for political reasons, it signals that public health is being shaped by politics rather than science.
  3. This undermines Americans’ safety, as delayed or filtered outbreak data deprives people of the ability to prepare and protect themselves.
  4. Loss of stable leadership
  1. The CDC’s long-term programs on vaccines, pandemic readiness, and chronic disease prevention depend on steady leadership.
  2. Removing the director disrupts these efforts and creates confusion for states and local agencies that rely on CDC guidance.
  3. Without stability, America will be less prepared for the next emergency, from avian flu to bioterror threats.
  4. Declining public trust in health institutions
    1. The CDC has historically been the global standard for disease control, coordinating both domestic and international responses to disease outbreaks.
    2. A firing erodes trust at home and abroad, making Americans more skeptical of vaccines and less likely to follow U.S. leadership globally.
    3. That loss of credibility hurts both people’s health and America’s global influence during public health crises.

Question: Was CPAC a success for the MAGA movement?

Answer: No, because it highlighted cracks in the movement’s foundation.

Thought process:

CPAC stands for the Conservative Political Action Conference; its goal as an arm of the MAGA movement is to energize support for the coalition, particularly as it exists as the leading faction of the Republican party. For the conference to be a success, MAGA needs to see a major show of unity and energy. However, Donald Trump, and MAGA along with him, face a popularity crisis in the face of Venezuela, Iran, and the uncertainty of a MAGA future without Trump at the helm.

  1. Generational divides
    1. Gen Z conservatism is on the rise across the country. For MAGA to see success at CPAC, young people have to show up in droves and passionately. This would essentially cement the future of MAGA as a political force to be reckoned with beyond older voters.
    2. However, fault lines between young (<35) and older (>35) conservatives have begun to show at CPAC. The event as a whole was poorly attended, but this effect was particularly extreme among young voters. Largely, this is because young men, the primary young MAGA base, are frustrated with the war in Iran (and draft potential) even as Trump promised no new wars.
    3. CPAC exposed a potential alienation of one of MAGA’s most important voter bases. Even beyond the conference, MAGA suffers from a long term youth problem.
  2. Governmental divides
    1. CPAC largely serves as a confidence builder for Republican politicians and voters alike. For a successful conference, MAGA’s political leaders need to showcase the necessary united front for a confident base.
    2. However, even important Republicans expressed doubt in themselves and their president at the conference. Navy seals expected to give talks extolling America’s military might came out explicitly against conflict in Iran and Venezuela, as did Matt Gaetz.
    3. From this, CPAC paints a picture of a MAGA movement fractured from the inside out, unsure of their direction or their leadership. This is not only a bad sign for MAGA internally, it worries otherwise confident voters.
  3. Divides over succession
    1. Perhaps CPAC’s most important role is that of determining the line of Republican succession. Every year, CPAC runs a poll looking toward the next presidential candidate. As, let’s face it, Trump isn’t getting any younger, Republicans have begun to wonder who will take on the MAGA mantle. A successful CPAC for MAGA presents a clear answer to the succession crisis, which would allow MAGA a comfortable place as a semipermanent political institution.
    2. However, the CPAC poll was unenthusiastic and divided, with the generally unpopular JD Vance as the winner. Beneath the surface, it reveals a movement unsure whether to return to the center or move to the right without Trump.
    3. This shows well founded concerns over MAGA’s ability to survive beyond Trump. If the most successful CPAC shows MAGA as vital and dominant both now and in the future, then MAGA has much to worry about.
